What is a Process Control System?
A process control system, comprised of hardware and software components, has as its primary purpose the collection and analysis of data returned from input field devices, such as tank level meters, flow turbine meters, pH meters and pressure transmitters, for the purpose of controlling an industrial process through output field devices such as motor actuators, pumps and valves. Control is implemented by monitoring and/or systematically modifying process parameters or control policies used in the process, or by preparing control reports that initiate useful actions with respect to significant deviations and expectations. The following diagram illustrates the general concept.
